Samsung, once known for cheap, second-rate products, has become one of the leaders in HDTV technology and innovation. Samsung has improved it's reputation to the point that it is now one of the most respected manufacturers in the world. All Samsung's DLP rear-projection, LCD, and plasma HDTVs produce superb picture quality, and the Samsung HP-T5064 50-in. Flat Panel Plasma is no exception.
This Samsung HDTV has the now common 1365 X 768 resolution and 16:9
aspect ratio, with Filter Bright 2 anti-glare technology, but Samsung
has taken additional steps to combat image retention (a.k.a. screen
burn-in). By flooding the screen with white, moving the image around
the screen by user-defined number of pixels and amount of time, using
what is called a gray-scale ramp pattern across the screen, and
activating gray sidebars for non-widescreen 4:3 images. I'd say they
pulled out all the stops on this one. With rave reviews and a price
that has dipped below $1600.00, this could be the best 50-inch plasma
HDTV television for 2007.
Features.
A 15,000:1 contrast ratio includes a setting called "Just Scan" that
virtually eliminates cropping on the edges of the image and allows for
more of a high-definition image in this non-108p display. Patented
Ultra FilterBright keeps the pictures looking detailed and deeper at
every angle. The NTSC /ATSC tuner allows for HD and standard
over-the-air transmissions. The Clear-QAM tuner allows for reception of
digital cable signals without a set-top-box. Plasmas are known for
their ability to display fast action video and the HP-T5064 Samsung
HDTV is no exception. Gamers will further benefit from the Game Mode
setting. Three side-mounted HDMI ports allows for uncompressed signals
from your game consoles , HD-DVD, and other components. Other features
include: 18 bit color processing, and PIP (Picture-In-Picture). Are you watching a "green" TV? The HP-T5064 is Energy Star compliant which means it uses less electricity, and I'm all for that.
Connectivity.
A full complement of audio and video inputs include:
- 1 PC input
- Side audio/video inputes
- USB 2.0
- S-Video and composite connections
- 1 Headphone jack
The remote.
The usual long, thin, universal remote controlling up to four devices
other than the TV. The TV, volume, up & down, channel, and mute
buttons are illuminated, but this leaves the others in the dark. Be sure to check the latest user opinions and prices at Amazon.com .
Samsung HDTV ratings and reviews.
Reviewers and consumer alike could not be happier with the picture and
sound quality of this plasma HDTV television. Consumers at Amazon.com
give the Samsung HP-T5064 50-in. plasma
a rating of 41/2 out of 5 starts. The picture is crisp, clear, and
handles fast action video well. Standard TV signals also look better
than they do on a standard definition television.
- Sound is good with the hidden side speakers, but some state that the TrueSurround sound is a bit muffled.
- The TV is shipped (free) quickly with high quality service. Very
little set-up is required except for the initial picture adjustments.
- So, why not a full 5 star rating? Mainly because a couple of people
received damaged TVs. This is going to occur occasionally and there is
no evidence that it's a common problem with Samsung or Amazon.com.
- Some minor complaints include a dysfunctional PIP that only
displays analog TV transmissions, and one customer states that the
input setting cannot be changed if the input device is turned off when
the Plasma is turned on. In other words, if the TV input is set to PC,
and the PC is off when the TV is turned on, you won't be able to change
the input to another component. I have not heard of this problem from
anyone else.
The Perfect Picture magazine also gives rave reviews. The Panel
shows excellent detail, and gorgeous colors no matter what movie is
playing. The menu system is much improved over previous models. The
audio, however, leaves something to be desired. Of course, those with a
home theater system will not be effected by this. Overall, this is one of the best 50-in. plasma HDTV televisions on the market today, regardless of the low price.
