Plasma VS LCD TV Print E-mail

If you’re ready to purchase a new television, you may feel a bit overwhelmed determining the best type. Television sets have changed greatly in the past decades and they are definitely not the same sets our grandparents grew up with. Television sets are larger, brighter, and now they are flat enough to hang on a wall. When it comes to choosing a flat panel television, one thing is sure; everyone wants to know whether they should choose Plasma or an LCD HDTV television. Though Plasma and LCD televisions look similar, and both have very thin screens, their differences are plenty.

First, Plasma televisions use gas plasma cells, called phosphors to create a picture. Three phosphors are used, one green, blue, and red. When the gas phosphors are electrically charged, they in turn emit light. This is an overall advantage to Plasma television sets, since the light that is created has its origins in the Plasma cells, and not from an outside source. Unlike Plasma televisions, LCD television screens use a liquid crystal display. There are literally millions of crystals that are basically floating in liquid. The liquid and crystals are kept in place between two glass plates. Situated behind the glass plates is a bright florescent light. Because of this light, Plasma offers many benefits when compared to Liquid Crystal Display televisions.

Most experts agree that Plasma televisions offer an advantage over LCD sets, specifically in the area of showing contrast and true color definition. This is based on the fact that Liquid Crystal Display screens work by a principle known as “backlight”. Since backlighting is used to reflect light through the Liquid Crystals, it is very difficult, or impossible to achieve, a true color of black. There is always some light shining through with an LCD television and this not only affects the depth of the color black, but also the degree of contrast you may experience. In this area, Plasma television sets are clearly the winner.

Experts also agree that due to LCD television sets and backlighting, that Plasma televisions produce a picture that is more vivid, or has brighter colors. Without the additional light shining through, the colors are not faded. When experts compare the degree of brightness between Plasma sets and LCD screens, the LCD colors were less bright.

In addition, studies have shown that when viewing television from various angles, Plasma screens are the winner. Again, this is due to the fact of backlighting. When people view LCD sets from different angles, the picture will look distorted at a closer range than with a Plasma screen. This is a direct result from the light that is emitting between the pixels. Plasma offers a steady view that will not distort at close ranges as does LCD televisions. This is another point in favor of Plasma televisions.

In price comparison, Plasma televisions are easily defined as the winner. Some sets may be comparative in price, however, with the added clarity, contrast enhancement, and ease of viewing range, Plasma television sets offer more benefits for comparatively the same amount of money.

Plasma has a few negatives that weren’t mentioned here. Although much improvement has been made, plasma burn-in is still a possibility. And from what I gather plasmas will almost always use more power and run hotter which might lead to fan noise.

Also, the plasma value isn’t as apparent when comparing 1080p to 1080p, inch for inch.
